India’s Sugar Production Drops 16% to 95.40 Lakh Tonnes in Oct-Dec: ISMA

India's sugar production declined by 16% to 95.40 lakh tonnes during the first quarter of the current marketing year, which began in October 2024, according to data released by the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) on Thursday. The drop is primarily attributed to lower output in Maharashtra. During the same period last year, sugar production stood at 113.01 lakh tonnes.

The reported figures exclude sugar diverted for ethanol production.

While crushing rates in key states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka performed better than last year overall, disruptions in Uttar Pradesh during late December 2024 due to rains temporarily impacted cane supply and crushing rates.

During the first quarter, 493 sugar mills were operational, down from 512 mills in the same period a year ago.

State-Wise Sugar Production

  • Uttar Pradesh: The country’s largest sugar producer saw a marginal decline, with production dropping to 32.80 lakh tonnes from 34.35 lakh tonnes in the previous year.
  • Maharashtra: Production fell sharply to 30 lakh tonnes compared to 38.20 lakh tonnes last year.
  • Karnataka: Output decreased to 20.40 lakh tonnes, down from 24.91 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period.

ISMA plans to release its second advance estimates for sugar production by the end of January 2025.

The industry body has also forecasted lower domestic sugar consumption for the 2024-25 marketing year, projecting it at 280 lakh tonnes.
