Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal aims to double turmeric production to 20 lakh tonnes within 5 years

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the newly established National Turmeric Board will work towards expanding international markets to boost exports and double turmeric production to 20 lakh tonnes over the next five years.

In his speech during the Board’s inauguration, Goyal emphasized the Board’s role in advancing research and development for new turmeric products, while also leveraging India’s traditional knowledge for value-added turmeric goods.

"Turmeric, known as the golden spice, accounts for 70% of global production, with India being the leading producer. Our target is to double production to 20 lakh tonnes within five years," he told reporters.

The National Turmeric Board, officially notified by the government in October, is tasked with promoting the growth and development of turmeric and its products. India remains the world’s largest producer, consumer, and exporter of turmeric.

In the 2022-23 period, turmeric was cultivated on 3.24 lakh hectares in India, yielding 11.61 lakh tonnes. India grows over 30 varieties of turmeric across 20 states, with Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu being the largest producers.

India controls more than 62% of the global turmeric trade, exporting 1.534 lakh tonnes valued at USD 207.45 million in 2022-23 to markets like Bangladesh, the UAE, the USA, and Malaysia.

The Board’s initiatives aim to increase turmeric exports to USD 1 billion by 2030. Palle Ganga Reddy has been appointed as the Board’s first chairperson, with its headquarters located in Nizamabad, Telangana. The Board will include representatives from the Ministry of AYUSH, the Department of Pharmaceuticals, the Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and the Department of Commerce, as well as officials from key turmeric-producing states like Maharashtra, Telangana, and Meghalaya, known for its Lakadong turmeric.
